In this global era, the progress in economic, social, political, and cultural fields have made the world increasingly changing from day to day. It is a must for every individual to have skills so she or he could survive among the competition. At present, we have entered the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in which converts ASEAN into a free trade area. Many countries race themselves to develop their citizens to be experts or at least have skills. One of the basic skills needed to develop in every country especially in Indonesia is English. As the International language, English becomes a language that connecting every nation in the world. The author found out that how English is very important for Indonesia’s future in many aspects. AEC is an opportunity for Indonesia to wider its international marketing by increasing exports which will increase Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). AEC also stimulates the investors to invest their capital in this country so that the employment opportunities are increasingly widespread. This is due to a large number of jobs available with various needs for expertise. In this case, people need to realize that English competence plays an important role as one basic skill in dealing with AEC.
