At this time the Merdeka University Malang undergone a process of development in which more and more students and mostly come from outside the city of Malang, but to date the Merdeka University Malang not have adequate facilities to support the learning process that is in between a student dorm.

The number of students and student Merdeka University Malang who come from outside the city of Malang who have difficulty in finding a good place to stay, the rent is affordable, convenient, safe, close to the campus of the Free University of Malang, and adequate facilities. This happens because one of the causes is the Merdeka University Malang not provide student dormitories for students and female students.

Student dormitory is one means of shelter, socialize, and the establishment of a student's personality to create a togetherness, mutual understanding, tolerance, and harmonious life for each boarder. Provision of student dormitory facilities are an integral part in the improvement and development services to build the nature and character of good for students.

Therefore, to further promote or develop the Merdeka University Malang and to help students Merdeka University of Malang in order to get a decent place to live, then the Merdeka University Malang is necessary to provide the student dormitories are able to meet some of the rules as follows:
a. Functional, able to accommodate all the activities and accommodate a predetermined number of occupants.
b. Contextually, the resulting design was developed with reference to the local environmental conditions both on the physical aspects of the buildings at the Free University of Malang, visual hue environment, and climate.
c. Economical, design produced later is a low building costs both in construction and operational management.
