Peran Ganda Bapak Rumah Tangga (CD+Cetak)
This research discusses a promising theoretical approach to the study of stay-athome
dads (SAHDs). Because so little research on this topic currently exists, the
purpose of this study is to offer theoretical lenses through which to study the
SAHDs’ negotiation of their roles with their families and with greater society.
This theoretical approach may be potentially helpful in aiding scholars and
practitioners alike to understand the challenges that SAHDs and their families
routinely face. The theory that I propose to study the multi role negotiation of
SAHDs is Social Exchange Theory (SET) (Homans, 1958). SET offer very
different approaches to studying the subject of SAHDs, both methodologically as
well as theoretically. As such, the application of each of these theories in this
research focuses on aspects of the phenomenon most relevant to each theory. That
is, the discussion of SET will highlight the negotiation of roles in SAHD families.
Research has shown that stay-at-home fathers are evaluated more negatively than
stay-at-home mothers (Rosenwasser, Gonzalez, and Adams 1985; Kroska 2001)
and working parents (Brescoll and Uhlmann 2005). Participants in this research
were 3 men who live as stay at home dads for around 2 years. Each participant
answered questions about his role as stay at home dad is also a breadwinner.
Results indicated that participants seemed quite happy with their role even they
confront traditional gender role.
