By the end of 2004, in December 26, everybody was surprised by the tragedy that vanish millions of people in part of Asia. The most worst area that crushed by tsunami disaster is Aceh (Indonesia). So, the tsunami tragedy that happened in Aceh is being an international disaster and the biggest one that ever happened in Asia.
Media as the second eye of the public, has a duty to give information about this tragedy. Because, from media, the public is able to find out the real fact of Aceh tsunami tragedy as fast, cheap, and easy without go to the place where that accident did.
The purpose of the research is to define and analyse the meaning of the photo in Jawa Pos newspaper headline’s about Aceh tsunami tragedy from December 27th, 2004-January 27th, 2005. And the focus line is the aid from foreign country that came in to Aceh.
Photo media is the second eyes of the photographer that shows truly fact to the public. Even it’s just in two dimension, they are able to speak to the public how the event happen exactly like the real one. And to know the message in the photo, it uses Roland Barthes semiotics analysis model. It’s devides signs in to denotative sign which is the physical side of the photo and connotative sign which is the mentality side of the photo, and the myth will come then. From this model, we can reveal the message behind the photo it self.
The methods of the research is qualitative interpretive with the focus of aid from foreign countries. The analysis technique is using Roland Barthes semiotics analysis.
The result of the research is to show that journalism photo is able to speak to the public even it’s just in picture language, about the true fact of what happened in Aceh because of the tsunami disaster exactly like their own eyes. From six headline’s photo about the aid from foreign countries, five of them is shows the aid from United States of America (USA). It’s because USA is one of the country with the biggest aid for Aceh especially sent their military force. But, the fact is that their humanity action for Aceh is have other missions. For example, they came with the Christian missions to influence and get a new follower from Aceh that big part of them is a Moslem. Beside that, they came to discover the geographic condition of Indonesia. From it’s fact, Jawa Pos trying to change the public opinion (contemplation) about the other tendency behind the USA aid with this photos.
